What does it mean when Catholics say that the pope is the Vicar of Christ? What message does that send out into the world? Here is the message: men who have actively enabled a system of rape cover-up are supposed to show us the way to God.
We have a system whereby men who prove their loyalty through the cover-up of rape are promoted. (Please see this blog post: The Clerical System of Rewards: Access To Victims) Consider just two recent examples: The pope just appointed Robert McElroy as archbishop of DC. (See this article about how McElroy covered up rape.) Edward Weisenburger is another example of a man who was promoted to bishop and then archbishop after covering up rape. (Please consider this article about how he participated in rape cover up and the harassment of a victim in Oklahoma.) This process is like a gang initiation.
There are so many examples like this it is overwhelming. I do not even think our leaders care that we know. They are so far gone they have even lost a sense of shame.
I will not lie and say these men represent God. I will not lead others astray by pointing to our pope and our bishops and say that they are Christ unto us. If God is like these men, who would want to be with Him? Who would want to believe in Him?
How many little ones have been lost because of these men? How many people have lost faith in God completely because of their actions? And what does it say about the laity to sit back and accept this? Those who choose willful ignorance are complicit.
