Choosing Ignorance

2024/7/31

Today’s post will be short. There are two points I’d like to make.

First, I understand if people don’t want to think about clergy abuse. It is a heavy topic. However don’t talk about what you don’t understand. Don’t spout off smears against whistleblowers. Don’t make assumptions about outspoken victims. “They seem like they are against the church…” is victim shaming. If you don’t know that person, don’t say anything.

Remaining ignorant is a choice. Be responsible enough to not talk about something you don’t understand.

Second, people say “we just need more accountability” as if that statement alone is a solution. Then they move on with zero intention of ever figuring out why we have such a problem with accountability within the institutional church. When people who deeply understand the problem try to craft real solutions, invariably they are called “anti-Catholic”. They are smeared. Because anything that diminishes the power of those in power—any method of real accountability— is going to be labeled as anti-Catholic.

Once again, ignorance is a choice. Okay. But don’t tear down fellow Catholics who are in the trenches. This may not be your fight, but make sure you aren’t hurting those that are really trying to fight the good fight.
